La Città Verde, a social cooperative in Italy that creates inclusive jobs, and LyondellBasell, a multinational company, cooperate for the collection, transport, and disposal of non-hazardous waste. This waste, which stems from LyondellBasell’s industrial processes, is managed by La Città Verde.
La Città Verde provides LyondellBasell, a global company with a site in Ferrara, Italy, with a service to collect, transport and dispose of non-hazardous waste such as cardboard, glass and wood produced directly from their industrial process. This is possible thanks to the cooperative-owned waste treatment plant. By outsourcing services to a social enterprise, the partnership enables LyondellBasell to comply with national laws requiring the employment of disabled individuals. The partnership has expanded to include additional services like green maintenance.
The partnership has contributed to professionalisation of La Città Verde, and its visibility and financial stability. Over the last three years, the cooperative has processed an annual average of 86,550 kg of wood, 32,283 kg of paper, and 1,413 kg of glass. These activities enable sustainable waste management while creating inclusive employment for individuals with disabilities.
“This partnership can be replicated in other areas and with other partners. Companies of a certain size have a dual need: to properly dispose of their special waste and to fulfil their obligation to employ disabled individuals. There is potential to expand the partnership with LyondellBasell by processing other types of waste, such as plastic packaging, or by providing internal management and logistics services for waste produced in various divisions of the plant.”
