100 billion euros in the EU budget for social spending? The devil's in the details

The European Commission’s proposal to allocate €100 billion for social spending in the next EU budget sounds promising, but a closer look reveals critical gaps. In this open letter, RREUSE joins a coalition of 50+ European organisations calling for stronger safeguards to ensure that social inclusion, poverty reduction, and local empowerment are not sidelined. Despite the headline figure, the current framework risks diluting funding guarantees, weakening oversight, and marginalising local actors. Our joint statement urges EU institutions to:

- Guarantee funding for social inclusion, child poverty, and material deprivation;

- Strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms;
