2018 was a year of growth and strategic milestones for the RREUSE network. As the challenge of shifting from a linear, production-driven economy to a circular, value-preservation model became increasingly clear, RREUSE strengthened its role in shaping policies that support social enterprises at the heart of this transition.
Our 27 members across 25 European countries and the USA made a tangible impact, with 850 social enterprises collectively diverting 1 million tonnes of materials from landfill through re-use, repair, and recycling. These activities not only helped reduce waste but also provided employment, training, and support to 95,000 people, many from disadvantaged backgrounds.
On the policy front, RREUSE expanded its advocacy efforts, securing a new partnership with the European Commission’s DG for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) - a first for our organisation. We also contributed to key EU policy developments, from the EU Waste Framework Directive to the Ecodesign regulations and public procurement policies, ensuring that social enterprises are recognised as key players in the circular economy.
With our engagement in the GECES Expert Group on Social Enterprise and Social Economy, RREUSE reinforced its commitment to a future where environmental sustainability and social justice go hand in hand.
