Open letter: Google threatens existence of independent repair service providers

21st June 2019 | Letters, Publications

At the initiative of Runder Tisch Reparatur, a German organisation composed of repairers, NGOs, consumer organisation, scientists and local repair initiatives, a joint letter was sent to the European Commissioners Margrethe Vestager (Competition) and Karmenu Vella (Environment) endorsed by 17 organisations from across Europe including RREUSE.

This letter was addressing the issue of Google blocking adverts from independent repairers. Thousands of independent repairers are affected and can no longer advertise their services. At the same time, Google continues to allow adverts from manufacturers and their authorised repair shops.

RREUSE supports this call for a fairer repair market where independent repairers are on the same level playing field as repairers authorised by manufacturers. Repairers should not rely on the goodwill of manufacturers to do their jobs. Rules, if they exist, must be determined democratically.
