Policy recommendations for green and social ambition in EU textiles policies
Adopted in 2022, the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles represented a crucial step forward in establishing accountability within the textile industry. As we progress on our path toward environmental and social justice, it is essential to strengthen and expand upon the groundwork set by the previous legislative mandate. This is why RREUSE, joined forces with 7 NGOs and CSOs, to propose a roadmap to EU policymakers to make the textile sector more socially responsible and circular.
To this end, our priorities are focused on three key pillars. Each pillar addresses critical aspects of overproduction, accountability, and consumer transparency, setting a comprehensive framework for meaningful change:
- What’s in My Clothes?
- Tackle overproduction and textile waste.
- Clean up harmful practices in production.
- Emphasise the importance of renewable energy in supply chains.
- Who Made My Clothes?
- Ensure accountability and transparency across the supply chain.
- Address forced labor and advocate for living wages.
- Utilise trade mechanisms to promote sustainability.
- How My Clothes Are Sold?
- Combat green and social-washing in marketing practices.
